Principle 1: Challenge speciesism
We must commit to challenging speciesism in both ourselves and others. We must speak out when confronted with non-human animal discrimination in addition to recognizing how we ourselves perpetuate speciesism and benefit from human privilege.
Principle 2: Non-human animal centric
Non-human animal advocacy must center non-human animals in all of its messaging. Arguments focused on human health, the environment or human rights issues as reasons to not harm non-human animals should be used sparingly or not at all.
Principle 3: Non-human animal resistance
It is important to recognize that non-human animals are resisting their oppression everyday and our role is to support them in their struggle, not advocate in place of them. It is not our movement, it is theirs. They are not voiceless and we must work to amplify their voices.
Principle 4: Ask: “What do we owe non-human animals?”
The path for best advocacy is not simply answered by asking “what will make the most vegans?” or “what message will resonate with others?”.
“What do we owe non-human animals? or “how would they like to be represented?” must inform our advocacy.
